It was a warm day, and the sunshine leaked through the tall tree leaves in the thick forest. Four small paws came to a halt and little Xander turned himself around, waiting for Daimond. "I win!" he said, wagging his tail. Sitting himself down, he lolled his tongue, waiting. Today was the day that Daimond, his mother-like figure, was going to teach him how to hunt. He was so eager and curious on how to do it, and couldn't help but fidget as he sat down in the dead leaves.

Daimond smiled."Yes,I suppose you did."She sat down on the ground infront of Xander and spoke agian."Now,one of the first things you need to learn is to scent.A wolf isnt a wolf without a sense of smell."She raised her muse to the air and sniffed.

Xander imitated Daimond, lifting his short snout up into the air. He sniffed slightly, but all he could smell was the wetness of the leaves below him and the dirt. A small draft swept up against the two wolves and it made his pelt twitch with excitement. "I can't smell much..," he said, lowering his ears, "Am I doing it right?" He whined slightly.

WIht an amused 'hm' Daimond smiled softly."Worry not,Xander.Young ones are not to be expected to grasp the conscept immidiatly. You just need to consentrate.Put all smells out of your head except for the smell of flesh.Blood.Prey."Without noticing,a dribble of drool ran down Daimond`s chin, and she sniffed again. She was a skillfull hunter, rather herself.Immidiatly destracting scents were put away, and scents that were important came.Rabbits.Deer.Owls,other birds, and even mice.

Xander nodded and decided to keep his eyesight on one object so that he could concentrate. Now that his yellow orbs were transfixed onto the tree, he stood still and started to breath deeply, calmly, as if he were sleeping. He concentrated a little harder and thought of elk, and buffalo, and deer. Obviously, he wouldn't be hunting that sort of game today. Soon his small jaw dropped a little and his tongue rolled out, smoothing out the edge of his black skinned mouth. "I think I smell something, a hare maybe.." he said, quietly.

Daimong got up upon her strong back legs and laned her front paw quetly on a tree trunk, sniffing harder.Daimond simply nodded and landed on four paws again."That`s right. In time, you`ll learn how to distinguish scents from one another to the fullest extent. And now..."Daimond`s tongue flickered out to lick her chops before sliding back in."We hunt."She checked her scenting once more and continued onward,in a crouched position, her tail and belly just off the ground, head and ears low and eyes wide.Sure, her position wasa little comical, but it would work.

Xander held in his yips of excitement and got low to the ground as well, his tummy just sweeping against the leaves on the floor. He pinned his ears back and flexed his muscles, following right behind Daimond. He wondered if his mother would teach him the same things as Daimond, and he wondered if she was alright. All he knew was when he was old enough, he'd go out to find her.

Diamond crawled foward on silent paw, then murmered out of the side of her mouth."Make sure, you pick up ehr feet and place them careuflly,as to not make a sound."The scent became stronger, and she stopped the rabbit came into view."Now,rememeber this-Rabbit`s have eyes on the side of their head,so they can see almost everywhere. So you have to run fast."He paced forward a little until her shape eyes saw the rabbit tense. It was then when he lunged. The rabbit took off like a brown blur,Daimond kicking up dirt on it`s heels. She snapped at it`s back legs and it tumbled onto it back.Diamond snapped it up by it stomach gently, and it screamed.SHe shook it harder, blood begining to fly, until the rabbit went quiet and still.Diamond dropped it to the ground, panting hungrilly.

As he saw Daimond chase around the hare in the small opening of the woods, he couldn't help it; He giggled. Soon he was rolling over on his back, laughing his head off. The image of Daimond chasing a rabbit was very comical and it made him happy, until he lifted his head, to see that the rabbit was gushing blood. Xander's face fell, and he lowered his ears, examining the rabbit from afar. Did it always have to end this way? It probably did. Xander got up and trotted silently towards Daimond, sniffing the air which was thick with the strong smell of blood. "That was cool!" he said, lying through his teeth. It really was cool, until the hare died. This would need some getting used to.

Daimond licked the fresh blood of her lip and nodded."Cool I suppose. But you`ll need to learn how to perfect it.Or the prey will hunt you."SHe moved her paw back a little as the blood seeped through on the ground."Eat it while it`s fresh.I`m not hungry."

Xander looked up at Daimond, slightly confused. "But aren't we only supposed to hunt when we're hungry?" he asked, before lowering his small head down to the hare. He sniffed it once and sighed, beginning to rip open the carcass, getting down to the fresh flesh. Xander started to eat it, resentfully.

Daimond looked at him oddly."I s`pose."Diamond shook herself uncomfortably.SHe hadnt been raised like normal wolves.SHe had been raised in human hands,so she ate weather she was hungry or not."Well, there will always be rabbits."She twitched her tail, and sniffed the air every once in a while.

He stopped chewing and lifted his maw as well, letting a cool breeze ease him. With that, he lowered his head, taking the rabbit in his grasp. Xander waddled over to a large rock with many cracks in it and dropped the hare. He started to dig, dig until a hole was large enough to fit the hare inside. Pushing it with his nose, it rolled in.
After, he covered the dirt back onto the hare inside the hole, walking back over to Daimond once it dissapeared. "A little technique I learned from my mother," he said, grinning, "She used to do it before winter so we could find it in desperate times." Just after he said it, another scent filled his nostrils, not the scent of a hare, but of a squirrel. Xander looked up at Daimond, then lowered his small body, making sure all of his paws came up, and then down silently. He sniffed the air once more, deciding where it was coming from ....

Daimond watched hi with amusment."You will make a fine hunter."She watched him drop low and she barked out a laugh, turning on her heels and doing the same movement before, placing her front paws on a tree trunk. But,this time, she hoisted herself up and began climbing the tree, almost like a squirrel. After not too long, she was a bit high, and the breeze from the sky whipped her face.

Xander did not even look back at Daimond, his insticts were taking over him now. The scent grew stronger with each small step he took, and he stopped right when a bush blocked his view. Just beyong it, he could sense the presence of a squirrel. Flexing his small muscles, he started to walk quietly around it, and once he caught sight of the squirrel, he pounced!
Unfortunatly, he missed but the chase was on! Xander swerved in and out between obstacles. He even tripped over a small rock, throwing him off balance but quickly he was on his feet again, just behind the squirrel who was about to climb a large maple tree. So, Xander pounced again, but to his dissapointment, the squirrel had already made it's way up the trunk, forcing Xander to slam right into it. He whimpered slightly before shaking his head. Growling, he got up and leaned up on the tree with his front two paws, but the squirrel was long gone. "Dang!" he exclaimed, getting off and looking around for Daimond, not noticing that she was in a tree.
